Timeline

How it unfolded

  1. 2003

    The matchup finds its stakes

Phoenix pushed the eventual champions in six games behind a young Amar’e Stoudemire. San Antonio’s experience prevailed, but the Suns had identified the opponent that would frame their era.

  2. 2004–05

    Seven Seconds or Less arrives

Nash returned to Phoenix, Mike D’Antoni opened the floor and the Suns won 62 games. The Spurs slowed enough possessions, attacked mismatches and won a five-game Western finals that was closer than its length suggested.

  3. 2007

The series that became a permanent what-if

Robert Horry’s hip-check on Nash triggered suspensions for Stoudemire and Boris Diaw after they left the bench area. San Antonio won the pivotal Game 5 and the series, leaving Phoenix to wonder what a full roster might have changed.

  4. 2008

    The champions close another door

Duncan’s unlikely three forced double overtime in Game 1, and San Antonio took the series in five. The Suns’ midseason trade for Shaquille O’Neal had changed their shape without changing the opponent in their way.

  5. 2010

    Phoenix finally breaks through

A more balanced Suns team swept San Antonio. Goran Dragić’s fourth-quarter eruption in Game 3 became the release after years of frustration, even though Phoenix’s championship pursuit ended one round later.
