Timeline

How it unfolded

  1. 2003–10

Three stars reach the same crossroads

Dwyane Wade had already delivered Miami’s first championship with Shaquille O’Neal in 2006. LeBron James won two MVPs in Cleveland but no title during his first seven seasons. Chris Bosh became Toronto’s franchise leader in points and rebounds and a five-time All-Star.

  2. July 2010

The Decision moves the league south

James announced he would leave Cleveland and take his talents to South Beach. Miami re-signed Wade and acquired both James and Bosh, creating an unprecedented player-built superteam and immediate championship-or-failure expectations.

  3. 2011

    Talent meets consequences

The first season reached the Finals, but Dallas changed coverages, protected the paint and won three straight close games to take the title. LeBron’s uneven series made the summer a referendum on whether the experiment could work.

  4. 2012 East finals

The night everything could have ended

Miami trailed Boston 3–2 with Game 6 at TD Garden. Facing elimination and immense pressure, LeBron scored 45 points with 15 rebounds. Miami won Game 7, then beat Oklahoma City for the trio’s first championship.

  5. 2013

    The perfected version survives

A 27-game winning streak showed Miami’s speed, spacing and switching at full force. In Finals Game 6, Bosh’s offensive rebound found Ray Allen for the season-saving corner three; Miami won Game 7 for a second straight title.

  6. 2014

The machine runs out of time

The Spurs’ passing and depth overwhelmed a worn Miami team in the Finals. James returned to Cleveland that summer, ending a four-year run of four Finals, two championships and a permanent change in player power and roster construction.
