The franchises meet before their peaks
Houston and Utah began a long playoff history before either defining core had fully matured. By the next decade, both would become annual Western obstacles.

Houston’s title path runs through Utah
The Rockets beat the Jazz in five in the Western finals. Hakeem Olajuwon controlled the series and Houston went on to win its first championship.
1995
The sixth seed survives again
Utah won 60 games, but defending champion Houston took a first-round Game 5 in Salt Lake City. The Rockets continued all the way to a second consecutive title.
1997
Stockton sends Utah to the Finals
Houston added Charles Barkley to Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, but Utah finally broke through. Stockton’s buzzer-beating three in Game 6 clinched the first Finals trip in Jazz history.
