Before the game

Spoiler-free context

Los Angeles entered the Finals 11–0 in the playoffs after sweeping the West, while MVP Allen Iverson had dragged an injured Philadelphia roster through two seven-game series. The matchup looked like the final step in an inevitable Lakers postseason.

  • The Lakers had not lost in more than two months and were pursuing a perfect playoff run.
  • Philadelphia was missing key health and depth, placing an extraordinary creation burden on Iverson.
