Before the game

Spoiler-free context

Run TMC had made Golden State the league's most exhilarating scoring team, but the seventh-seeded Warriors faced a deeper Lakers group in the second round. Los Angeles had taken the opener, increasing the pressure on Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin to turn pace into a road split.

  • Los Angeles led 1–0, while Golden State was trying to avoid returning home in a two-game deficit.
  • The Warriors had upset San Antonio in the first round behind a three-guard style that challenged the era's conventional size.
