The Paul George games I can’t forget

My favorite Paul George games are not necessarily the cleanest ones. They are the nights when you can see him discover the dimensions of his own game in real time—the jumper getting taller, the handle getting quieter, the defensive assignment becoming personal.

Game 1 in Miami in 2013 was the arrival. George hit the shot that should have stolen the night, a deep three that forced overtime against the defending champions. The ending went the other way, but the feeling remained: Indiana had a wing who could stand in the same frame as LeBron James and refuse to shrink.

A year later, with the Pacers’ season narrowing possession by possession, George scored 37 in Game 5. He played with the strange calm that always made his best scoring nights feel less like explosions than weather systems. The points accumulated before you realized the entire game had moved into his rhythm.

Then there is Phoenix in 2021: 41 points on the road, without Kawhi Leonard, to keep the Clippers alive. It was veteran Paul George—scarred, criticized, more deliberate—solving a playoff game with patience. These are the games I return to because they contain three different versions of the same player, all unmistakably smooth.
