Before the game

Spoiler-free context

The Lakers had broken up their championship core by trading Shaquille O'Neal, leaving Kobe Bryant to lead a remade team under new coach Rudy Tomjanovich. Orlando arrived with top pick Dwight Howard only weeks into the career that would eventually make him the league's dominant center.

  • Bryant was beginning his first season as the unquestioned center of the Lakers franchise.
  • Howard was an 18-year-old rookie whose defensive reputation and extraordinary athleticism were still mostly projections.
